Steps to be Followed if Your Car Overheats

Do you face overheating problems with your car? If so, then reading this blog will help you to gain detailed knowledge on this subject matter. We have also provided the steps to be followed in order to avoid such circumstances. It should be noted that though the issue of overheating is pretty common in cars it is a very unhealthy sign for your vehicle. There are various factors that lead to overheating. We have decided to make a list of such factors that include:

  • Leakage in the cooling system
  • Coolant concentration
  • Bad thermostat
  • Bad radiator
  • Worn out or burst hoses
  • Improper functioning of radiator fan
  • Broken or loose belt
  • Bad water pump

Ignoring such circumstances can cause severe damage to your car. So make sure you don’t drive your car for more than a quarter-mile if you experience a case of overheating. Your car should be towed to the nearest auto maintenance and repair shop as soon as possible. Though there are predicaments when you might not have the luxury of finding such a service, because you might find yourself stranded in no man’s land.  In that case you are advised to take the following steps that have been provided below. This will ensure that your car doesn’t get damaged any further.

  • Pull over at a safe location and turn off the car engine.
  • Don’t open the hood of your car until it is completely cool.
  • When you do open the hood, check the coolant level in the radiator of your vehicle. If you are unaware of where the coolant reservoir is, search for it in the owner’s manual.
  • Make sure that the radiator cap is cool before opening it. To always be on the safe side, it’s best to twist off the radiator cap with a towel if there is any hot steam, and immediately jump away while doing so. In case of an emergency, you can also fill coolant to the top of the reservoir.
  • Do not skip the step of also checking to see if the lower and upper radiator hoses have not been blocked.
  • You can then restart the car engine.
  • Carefully monitor the temperature gauge of your car as soon as you’ve restarted your car. If you notice that the temperature gauge crosses the optimal mark, then pull over to a safe location and once again turn the engine off.
